6/14/17 a day on Prince of Wales Island Alaska

First stop going north was at Sarkar Rest stop.

This is in the Tongass National Forest. This NF boat is just left on the shore. It was tempting to row out in the lake.

Saw about 50 of these little Sitka Deer through out the day. All alive, no road kill.

Walking up the 465 steps and wooden paths to the cave entrance. This area has lots of caves, karsts and sink holes. This is a rain forest. The vegetation is gigantic.

This plant is 6 feet in diameter.

These are little tiny fern.
Looking up. Notice how the big roots wrap around the large boulders.

These look like Maiden Hair Fern.

Trees covered in moss. Looking through the forest at eye level.

At the cave entrance. I thought I wanted to do this. Guided tours for up to 6 need a two day advance reservation.  Too spooky for me. John ventured in 20 feet.

The smaller natural entrance.

A lake is way far down in the distance.

The trees and ferns are hanging from a rotten tree.

Looking down alongside the boardwalk.

Noticing large slugs as we returned to the road. About 6 inches long.

Little tiny water catcher on this stem. About a fourth inch.

Then drove to Memorial Beach Picnic Area in Sumner Bay. 1978 plane crash killed all 12 National Forest employees.

The walk here was really spooky. I wore a bear bell and carried bear spray. It seemed like we walked through a haunted forest and we heard something growl on the way in and on the way out. Was it bear or Sasquatch.

Picked up a rock.

White cap peaks beyond the white cap sea.

Tiny blossoms.

Bears could hide anywhere.

Many streams to cross. Always a pretty site.

And then we see this. Broken down vehicles are abandoned.

A tunnel of trees.

Lily pads.

We drove the 7 miles to here for Gas. The station wouldn't reopen until 6:00pm. It was 5:00. We gambled and drove the 80 miles to the next station.

Finished the day with ice cream while we waited our pizza.
